HK University Application Timeline: Month-by-Month Guide
Applying to a Hong Kong university as a non-local student involves multiple overlapping processes: university applications, scholarship applications, visa applications, and the examination cycle itself. Missing one deadline can cascade into problems across the others. This guide maps the full journey month by month — from early research through final enrollment — so you can plan ahead and never be caught off guard.
The Application Year at a Glance
Hong Kong universities operate on a September start. The application year for September entry begins approximately 12 months earlier, in September of the preceding year.
Example: Applying for September 2027 entry means your preparation starts September 2026 and runs through August 2027.
Month-by-Month Calendar
September — Begin Research
This is the earliest action month, primarily for students in their penultimate year who want to enter the year after next, or for students entering their final pre-university year.
Actions:
- Research target universities and specific programs using official rankings (QS, Times, Shanghai) and program-level guides
- Attend virtual information sessions — most HK universities hold webinars for prospective international students in September/October
- Create a shortlist of 4–6 programs across 2–4 universities
- Check program-specific prerequisites (certain programs require specific A-Level/IB subjects)
- Research scholarship opportunities — many require long lead time to prepare strong applications
Deadlines this month: None critical for applications yet.
October — Open Applications and Attend Open Days
Actions:
- Non-JUPAS applications open (CUHK, HKUST, PolyU, CityU, and most others open their Non-JUPAS portals around October–November)
- Attend open days — HK universities typically hold physical open days for local students in late October/November, and virtual open days for international applicants
- Begin drafting your personal statement
- Request referee reports from teachers (allow 4–6 weeks for referees to complete)
- Obtain official transcripts from your current school
JUPAS (for HK residents): JUPAS application also opens in October; JUPAS applicants must submit by December.
Gaokao track (Mainland students): Applications for the dedicated mainland programme at HKU, CUHK, HKUST, and PolyU typically open in October, running through December for preliminary interest registration.
November — Application Submission Window
Actions:
- Submit Non-JUPAS applications — many programs set an early deadline of November 30 to December 15 for first-round consideration (and scholarship eligibility)
- Critically: submit early for scholarship consideration. Universities identify scholarship candidates from early applicants. Late submissions may miss scholarship review rounds entirely.
- Begin university short-listing interviews (some programs conduct interviews from November onwards — particularly Medicine, Law, and Design)
- IELTS/TOEFL: If you need to sit an English proficiency test, book November or December sittings to have scores ready for January submission
December — Final Application Submissions
Actions:
- Final Non-JUPAS application deadlines for most programs: December 31 or first week of January
- Submit JUPAS application if applicable (JUPAS deadline is typically mid-December)
- Confirm all referee reports and transcripts have been received by universities
- Check application portals — log in to verify submitted documents are showing correctly
- Mainland admissions programmes: Primary application window for major universities runs December–February; confirm each university’s specific deadline
January — Conditional Offers Begin
Actions:
- Begin receiving conditional offers from universities (offers made “subject to satisfactory examination results”)
- Reply to offers by stated deadline — universities typically allow 2–4 weeks to respond to an offer
- Prioritise offers if you have received multiple: rank them and note each university’s conditions
- Continue interview preparation — HK universities (particularly for Medicine, Design, Social Work) may schedule interviews in January–February
- Begin researching student visa requirements so you are ready to apply as soon as you have a confirmed offer
February — Merit Scholarship Notification Round 1
Actions:
- First round of university merit scholarship offers typically issued alongside or shortly after admission offers
- Scholarship offers may include invitation to an interview (for top government scholarships, the interview is separate from admissions)
- Note: HKSES (government scholarship) candidates are not directly applying — universities nominate; you may be contacted
- Respond to scholarship offers on time — many require confirmation within 2 weeks
- Continue exam preparation (IB, A-Levels in May–June; DSE in March–May)
For Mainland students (Gaokao track): Universities begin reviewing applications; some issue preliminary offers. Final offers dependent on gaokao results in June.
March — DSE Examinations Begin
Actions:
- DSE written examinations begin (typically late March through late May)
- Students currently sitting DSE: focus primarily on examinations. Applications already submitted.
- A-Level / IB students: examinations are in May–June; final exam preparation period
- Review offer conditions — make sure you understand exactly what grades you need to confirm your offer
April — Scholarship Interviews and Confirmation
Actions:
- Government HKSES scholarship interviews may take place in April–May
- University scholarship second round — some universities hold a second scholarship round for students who applied later
- Update universities if your predicted grades change (upward or downward) — universities appreciate proactive communication
May — IB and A-Level Examinations
Actions:
- IB Diploma examinations run throughout May
- A-Level examinations (UK/Cambridge) begin in May, running through June
- After submitting exams: finalise your ranked preference list of offers
- DSE results are expected in late July — plan your schedule around this
June — Gaokao and Final Preparation
Actions:
- Gaokao takes place (typically 7–8 June for national examinations in Mainland China)
- Gaokao results typically released within 2 weeks of examination
- HKU, CUHK, HKUST, PolyU, and CityU all issue formal offers to mainland applicants within 2–3 weeks of gaokao results
- A-Level results in some regions (particularly Singapore): released in June
- Begin preparing student visa application documentation so you are ready to submit as soon as you hold a confirmed offer
July — Results and Offer Confirmation
This is the most critical month. Multiple result releases happen in quick succession.
Actions:
- IB results released: Typically mid-July. Offers conditioned on IB results are confirmed/withdrawn.
- DSE results released: Typically late July. This triggers JUPAS offer allocation for local students.
- A-Level results (UK Cambridge): Released in mid-August (see August section)
- Confirm your university offer immediately upon receiving results — universities have hard deadlines for confirmation
- For HK visa application: submit study visa application as soon as you have a confirmed, unconditional offer
- Scholarship final notification for some awards
August — Final Confirmation and Enrollment Preparation
Actions:
- A-Level results released (UK CAIE and other international A-Level boards): typically mid-August
- Final offer confirmation for A-Level students
- Submit or complete student visa application if not yet done — allow 4–8 weeks processing; early August submission targets pre-September processing
- Arrange housing — if not assigned a university hall, arrange private rental (monthly rentals in Kowloon near PolyU or CityU: HKD 5,000–10,000 single occupancy)
- Set up a Hong Kong bank account — HSBC and Hang Seng both offer simplified account opening for incoming non-local students; bring your passport, offer letter, and one proof of address
- Purchase health insurance if not covered by university scheme
- September enrollment: Registration, orientation week, and first classes begin
Summary Table: Critical Deadlines
| Month | Deadline / Event |
|---|---|
| October | Non-JUPAS applications open; gaokao early registration |

| December | Final Non-JUPAS deadline; JUPAS deadline |
| January–February | Conditional offers issued; scholarship interviews |
| March | DSE examinations begin |
| May | IB and A-Level examinations |
| June | Gaokao; gaokao-track HK offers |
| July | IB results; DSE results; JUPAS final allocations |

Plan backwards from September. Every month without action is a month of competitive advantage lost to candidates who started earlier.
