Hong Kong Education Bachelor (BEd) Complete Guide 2026

Teaching remains one of the most stable and respected professions in Hong Kong, and the undergraduate Bachelor of Education (BEd) is the most direct route into it. Unlike the postgraduate PGDE path — which requires you to finish another degree first — a BEd lets you qualify as a teacher in a single five-year programme that combines subject knowledge, pedagogy and supervised school placements. This guide covers the major BEd and education double-degree programmes at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the 2026 JUPAS codes, admission scores, the legal path to becoming a Registered Teacher, the LPAT language barrier, tuition, and what graduates actually earn.

A major 2026 structural change at EdUHK

The most important thing to understand before applying in 2026 is that EdUHK has restructured its undergraduate education offerings into 13 co-terminal “double-degree” programmes, coded JS8001 to JS8013 in JUPAS. Each one awards two degrees over five years of full-time study: a subject Bachelor’s degree (a BA, BSc or BSocSc) and a Bachelor of Education (Honours).

This matters because the older standalone codes you may still see referenced on faculty pages or in older guides — for example the single-degree “BEd (Hons) English Language – Primary” or “BEd Early Childhood Education” — are no longer the live JUPAS entry codes for 2026/27 entry. The legacy Early Childhood code, for instance, was folded into JS8006. The rationale is straightforward: a graduate now leaves with a recognised subject degree alongside the teaching qualification, which improves employability and gives a fallback if they later move out of the classroom — a sensible hedge given Hong Kong’s declining school-age population.

The 13 EdUHK double-degree programmes for 2026/27 are:

JS Code Programme
JS8001 BA Creative & Digital Arts + BEd (Music)
JS8002 BA Creative & Digital Arts + BEd (Visual Arts)
JS8003 BA Digital Chinese Culture & Communication + BEd (Chinese Language)
JS8004 BA English Studies & Digital Communication + BEd (English Language)
JS8005 BA Heritage Education & Arts Management + BEd (Chinese History)
JS8006 BSocSc Psychology + BEd (Early Childhood Education)
JS8007 BA Personal Finance + BEd (Business, Accounting & Financial Studies)
JS8008 BSc AI & Educational Technology + BEd (ICT & Primary Science)
JS8009 BSc AI & Educational Technology + BEd (Primary Mathematics)
JS8010 BSc Sports Science & Coaching + BEd (Physical Education)
JS8011 BSc Integrated Environmental Management + BEd (Science)
JS8012 BSocSc Sociology & Community Studies + BEd (Geography)
JS8013 BSocSc Sociology & Community Studies + BEd (Primary Humanities)

There is also a two-year sub-degree route, JS8507 Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education, for students who do not initially meet degree-level requirements but want to enter the kindergarten/childcare sector and later articulate to a BEd.

HKU and CUHK education programmes

EdUHK is the dedicated teacher-training institution, but two of Hong Kong’s research universities also run highly competitive education degrees — typically structured as five-year double degrees that pair a strong subject discipline with education training.

HKU Faculty of Education:

JS Code Programme
JS6066 BA & BEd in Language Education – English
JS6080 BA & BEd in Language Education – Chinese
JS6092 BEd in Early Childhood Education and Special Education
JS6119 BEd & BSc (science major + education)

The HKU language-education double degrees (JS6066 / JS6080) are particularly valuable because, on graduation, they are deemed to satisfy the statutory language requirement for teaching English or Chinese — bypassing the LPAT exam described below. JS6119 lets you combine a school science subject (biology, chemistry, physics, food & nutrition, molecular biotechnology and others) with a teaching qualification.

CUHK education programmes:

JS Code Programme
JS4331 BA (Chinese Language Studies) & BEd (Chinese Language Education)
JS4343 BA (English Studies) & BEd (English Language Education)
JS4361 BEd in Mathematics and Mathematics Education
JS4372 BEd in Early Childhood Education
JS4329 Physical Education, Exercise Science and Health

As with HKU, the CUHK language-education double degrees (JS4331 / JS4343) confer automatic compliance with the teaching language requirement.

How competitive is admission?

EdUHK uses a “Best 5” scoring method: it sums the grade points of your best five HKDSE subjects (these can be core or elective; Citizenship & Social Development is excluded from the count, though you still need to attain the required level in it). General admission to EdUHK’s BEd double degrees sits roughly in the Best 5 ≈ 20–25 band. Based on 2025-intake data, indicative medians were around:

Treat these as approximate guidance rather than guaranteed cut-offs — programme medians shift year to year, and music, visual arts and physical education programmes also weigh portfolios, auditions or fitness tests heavily. The HKU language-education double degrees (JS6066, JS6080) and CUHK’s JS4343 are noticeably more selective — generally in the mid-to-high 20s on a Best 5 basis — because they sit within research universities and admit small cohorts. Always verify the exact figure for your target programme against the official JUPAS admission statistics for the latest intake before finalising your band ordering.

You will also need to clear the standard JUPAS general entrance requirement — Level 3 in English and Chinese Language, Level 2 in Mathematics, and the required attainment in Citizenship & Social Development — plus any subject prerequisites (for example, a relevant elective for science or mathematics education streams).

The path to becoming a teacher

A BEd is not just an academic degree — it is a recognised teacher-training qualification, and that distinction is what makes it powerful. Under Hong Kong’s Education Ordinance, anyone teaching in a school must be either a Registered Teacher (RT) or a Permitted Teacher (PT).

This is the core advantage of a BEd over a plain subject degree: you graduate already qualified for full registration, rather than entering the profession on the conditional permitted-teacher track.

The LPAT language barrier

If you intend to teach English or Putonghua in public-sector or local private day schools, you must meet the Language Proficiency Requirement by passing the Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT) at Level 3 or above in every paper.

The LPAT is a genuine filter — many otherwise capable candidates stall here. This is precisely why the language-education double degrees at HKU (JS6066/JS6080) and CUHK (JS4331/JS4343), and EdUHK’s recognised English/Chinese streams, are so valuable: their graduates are deemed to have met the language requirement and are exempt from sitting LPAT. If you are set on teaching a language subject, prioritising one of these routes can save you a high-stakes external exam after graduation. (Teachers in ESF schools, international schools, and NET-scheme appointees fall outside this requirement.)

Tuition fees

For local students in UGC-funded undergraduate programmes, tuition was frozen for roughly two decades at HK$42,100 per year. That freeze has now ended under the government’s phased increase. EdUHK’s provisional fees are approximately HK$47,000 per year for 2026/27 and HK$49,500 for 2027/28, with further annual rises expected. Because BEd programmes run five years rather than four, factor in the extra year of tuition and living costs when budgeting.

Non-local and international students in UGC-funded programmes at EdUHK pay approximately HK$180,000 per year for 2026/27. International applicants should also confirm whether their target education programme accepts non-JUPAS entry and how the LPAT and registration rules apply to non-permanent residents intending to teach in local schools.

Career outcomes and salary

Education is one of the strongest verticals in Hong Kong for graduate employment certainty. According to EdUHK’s 2024 Graduate Employment Survey, about 95.8% of BEd graduates were employed or in further study within three months of graduation, and roughly 95.4% of employed BEd graduates entered the education/teaching field — an unusually direct degree-to-career pipeline compared with most disciplines.

On pay, degree-holding teachers in government and aided schools are placed on the civil service Master Pay Scale (MPS). The Graduate Master/Mistress (GM) grade typically starts around MPS Point 15 — about HK$35,080 per month (entry may be set at MPS 14, around HK$33,405, depending on qualifications), rising steadily with annual increments. EdUHK reported that its 2024 BEd graduates earned an average starting salary of about HK$34,931 per month — a record high — while PGDE graduates averaged around HK$36,989. These figures are competitive with most non-finance graduate starting salaries in Hong Kong, and the teaching profession offers strong job security, structured pay progression, and generous holidays.

2026 outlook: demand by subject

A word of realism: Hong Kong does not have a general teacher shortage. A declining school-age population has reduced the number of teaching posts, and some schools have faced class reductions or closures. This is part of why EdUHK consolidated its standalone BEd codes into the JS8001–JS8013 double degrees — the dual qualification gives graduates more flexibility.

That said, demand is uneven by subject. English, Chinese (with Putonghua/LPAT competence), Mathematics, and STEM/ICT specialisations remain the most reliably employable. The LPAT Level-3 barrier makes language-stream graduates who already satisfy the language requirement especially sought after. The Native English Teacher (NET) Scheme continues, with 73 aided schools opting in for 2025/26 — but from 2025/26 onward NET applicants generally need an English-major bachelor’s degree, a PGDE majoring in English Language, and a TEFL/TESL qualification, so the NET route is more of a post-graduate path than an undergraduate entry point.

Choosing the right programme — a quick framework

Frequently asked questions

Is a BEd better than doing a normal degree then a PGDE? Both lead to Registered Teacher status. A BEd is more efficient (one five-year programme, qualified on graduation) and a good choice if you are already certain about teaching. A degree-plus-PGDE keeps your options open longer but takes longer overall and means a separate, competitive PGDE application.

Can international (non-JUPAS) students apply? Yes, through each university’s non-JUPAS/international admissions route, but confirm programme availability, English requirements, and how teacher registration and LPAT apply to non-permanent residents before committing.

Do I have to pass the LPAT? Only if you teach English or Putonghua in public-sector or local private day schools — and not if you graduate from a recognised language-education programme that confers exemption.

What if I decide not to teach? The 2026 EdUHK double degrees award a full subject degree (psychology, sociology, AI, sports science, finance, etc.) alongside the BEd, giving you a credible non-teaching fallback.
