Hong Kong Sports & Exercise Science Bachelor Complete Guide 2026
Sport science used to be a niche choice for students who simply enjoyed PE. That has changed. Hong Kong’s ageing population, the rise of personal health management, the professionalisation of elite sport after the city’s Olympic medals, and a booming wellness and fitness-technology industry have all pushed exercise science into the mainstream. For DSE students who want a science-based degree that leads to careers in health, performance, rehabilitation, education and sports business, this is one of the most underrated pathways in the JUPAS system — competitive, but far less crowded than physiotherapy or medicine.
This guide covers every undergraduate route into the field in 2026: the programmes, JUPAS codes, entrance requirements, the all-important fitness and selection tests, what you actually study, and where graduates end up.
What is Sports & Exercise Science?
Sports and exercise science applies physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition and motor learning to human movement and performance. It is a genuine laboratory science — students dissect how muscles produce force, how the cardiovascular system adapts to training, how the brain controls movement, and how injury and disease alter all of it.
It is important to distinguish three closely related but different degrees in Hong Kong:
- Sports Science / Exercise Science — the science of performance and health, often with a technology or coaching orientation. Strong physiology and biomechanics content.
- Physical Education (PE) — a teaching qualification leading to registration as a secondary-school PE teacher.
- Sports / Recreation Management — a business and administration degree focused on the sports industry, events and facilities.
Many Hong Kong programmes blend two of these. Choosing correctly matters, because the licence or registration you graduate with (teacher, coach, allied-health support) depends on which strand you take.
The Main Undergraduate Programmes (2026 JUPAS)
1. CUHK — Physical Education, Exercise Science and Health (JS4329)
Run by the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, CUHK’s programme is the most established research-led offering in the city. Within it, students can stream toward Exercise Science and Health Education or Physical Education (teacher track). It is small and selective.
- JUPAS code: JS4329
- First-year intake: about 16 students
- Minimum requirements: Chinese Level 3, English Level 3, Maths Compulsory Level 2, Citizenship and Social Development “Attained”, plus any 2 electives at Level 3
- Selection: applicants may be required to sit a physical proficiency test and/or a written test
- Indicative competitiveness: historically a middle-band programme; admitted students typically present a best-five score in the low-to-mid 20s, with PE, Biology or Chemistry strengthening an application
2. PolyU — BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and Technology (JS3160)
PolyU’s newer offering leans hard into the technology side — wearable sensors, performance analytics, injury-prevention engineering and sports data. It sits inside PolyU’s large combined-science intake.
- JUPAS code: JS3160
- Estimated quota: about 18 places (within a combined Faculty of Science intake of 371)
- Minimum requirements: Chinese Level 3, English Level 3, Maths Compulsory Level 2, Citizenship and Social Development “Attained”, and either any 2 electives at Level 3 or 1 elective at Level 3 plus M1/M2 at Level 3
- Subject weighting: highest weighting given to Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Design and Applied Technology, and ICT — though there is no compulsory elective
- Indicative competitiveness: as a science-faculty programme, expect a best-five in the low-to-mid 20s, with science electives clearly advantageous
3. EdUHK — Sports Science and Coaching (JS8726) and the PE double degree (JS8010)
The Education University runs the largest cluster of sports-related degrees, reflecting its teacher-training mandate:
- JS8726 — BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and Coaching: a non-teaching science and coaching degree, oriented toward strength and conditioning, coaching science and the sports industry
- JS8010 — BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and Coaching AND BEd (Hons) (Physical Education): a five-year double degree that produces a registrable PE teacher with a science backbone — the flagship route for anyone who wants to teach PE in a Hong Kong secondary school
- Selection: EdUHK programmes typically require satisfactory performance in a subject interview, written examination, physical fitness test and an aquatic (swimming) test; priority is given to applicants who have taken DSE Physical Education. A Self-Nomination Admissions Scheme also exists for students with strong sporting achievement
4. HKBU and other routes
HKBU offers physical education and recreation/leadership-oriented programmes through its education and social-science faculties, and the Hong Kong Baptist University has long-standing strength in sports and recreation management. Self-financing institutions and the Technological and Higher Education Institute also offer applied sports and fitness degrees, which can be reached via non-JUPAS application or articulation from an associate degree or higher diploma.
The Fitness and Selection Tests — Don’t Underestimate Them
This is the single biggest difference between sports science and a “normal” science degree. Several programmes (especially CUHK and EdUHK) screen applicants beyond DSE grades. Typical components include:
- Physical fitness test — items such as the multi-stage shuttle (beep) test for aerobic capacity, sit-ups, push-ups, sit-and-reach flexibility, standing broad jump and a sprint. You are not expected to be an elite athlete, but you must demonstrate genuine physical competence.
- Aquatic / swimming test — EdUHK in particular expects you to swim a set distance using a recognised stroke. Non-swimmers should learn well before the application cycle.
- Subject interview — expect questions on why sports science (not “I like sport”), basic exercise physiology awareness, and your own training or coaching experience.
- Written examination — a short test of English, comprehension and reasoning, sometimes with sport-specific content.
Practical advice: start preparing physical and aquatic ability at least six months ahead of the testing window, and document any sports representation, coaching, lifeguard or first-aid qualifications — these strengthen both the application and the interview.
What You Actually Study
A typical four-year curriculum (five for the EdUHK double degree) moves from foundational science to applied specialisation:
Years 1–2 — Foundations
- Functional anatomy and exercise physiology
- Biomechanics and kinesiology
- Motor learning and control
- Sport and exercise psychology
- Research methods and statistics
- Sports nutrition
Years 3–4 — Specialisation and application
- Strength and conditioning / exercise prescription
- Exercise for special populations (older adults, chronic disease, rehabilitation)
- Sports injury, first aid and recovery
- Performance analysis, sports technology and data (strong at PolyU)
- Coaching science and pedagogy (strong at EdUHK)
- A capstone research project or honours thesis
- A supervised internship or teaching practicum
Programmes that include the teacher track add education modules, classroom pedagogy and a school teaching practicum required for Hong Kong teacher registration.
Professional Recognition and Further Study
Hong Kong does not yet have a single statutory licence for “exercise physiologist” the way it does for physiotherapists. Career credibility instead comes from:
- Teacher registration (for PE-track graduates) via the Education Bureau
- Coaching accreditation through National Sports Associations and the Hong Kong Coaching Committee
- International certifications such as ACSM, NSCA (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) and sport-specific coaching badges, which many students pursue alongside the degree
- Postgraduate study — graduates frequently progress to a master’s or research degree in exercise physiology, sports physiotherapy bridging programmes, public health, or sports management; CUHK and EdUHK both offer taught and research postgraduate routes
Career Outcomes
Sports science is deliberately broad, and graduates spread across several sectors:
- Schools and education — PE teacher (with the teaching qualification), sports programme coordinator
- Elite and community sport — strength and conditioning coach, performance analyst, sports development officer with the Hong Kong Sports Institute or National Sports Associations
- Health and rehabilitation — exercise specialist in cardiac, pulmonary and oncology rehab; clinical exercise physiologist support roles; corporate wellness
- Fitness and wellness industry — fitness centre management, personal training, programme design for the rapidly expanding wellness market
- Sports technology and business — roles with wearable-tech firms, sports analytics start-ups, event and facility management
- Public health and ageing — physical-activity promotion roles in NGOs and government, increasingly important given Hong Kong’s demographic profile
Starting salaries vary widely by track. PE teachers enter the structured government pay scale, which is among the highest entry points. Industry and fitness roles typically start more modestly but scale quickly with certification, specialisation and the move into management or technology.
Is This Degree Right for You?
Choose sports and exercise science if you genuinely enjoy the science of the body, are comfortable with physiology, biomechanics and statistics, and have real physical competence to pass selection testing. It rewards students who combine science aptitude with coaching, athletic or volunteering experience.
Think carefully if you only want the teaching outcome — in that case the EdUHK double degree (JS8010) or a dedicated PE/education programme is the safer route. And if your interest is the business of sport rather than the body, a sports management degree will serve you better.
Action checklist for 2026 applicants:
- Decide your strand — exercise science, PE teaching, coaching, or sports tech — before ranking JUPAS choices
- Keep Biology, Chemistry, Physics or M1/M2 to maximise eligibility and weighting
- Begin physical and swimming preparation at least six months before selection tests
- Collect evidence of sporting, coaching, lifeguard and first-aid achievement for interviews and self-nomination schemes
- Treat CUHK JS4329, PolyU JS3160 and EdUHK JS8726/JS8010 as distinct products, not interchangeable backups
Sports science is no longer the “easy” choice it was once unfairly labelled. It is a demanding, multidisciplinary science degree with strong and diversifying employment prospects — and for the right student, one of the most rewarding pathways in the Hong Kong university system.
